Proficiency and State Championships

It’s been a big end to the year for some of our IAP swimmers. Nick, Cam and Hannah took part in the Swimming Victoria Proficiency meet held at Yarra Plenty pool on November 30. At Proficiency Meets, swimmers can gain a range of awards by reaching the relevant time standards in the four swimming strokes. These meets are technique focused, non-competitive and allow swimmers to track their progress by applying for and achieving higher awards each year. Well done to all three swimmers, each of whom achieved an award… Nick attained the Bronze award, Hannah the Silver Star award and Cam the Gold award. The next local proficiency meet will be held Sunday March 22, 2015 again at Yarra Plenty- it would be great to see as many members as we can get there! The club also congratulates Cameron Ladd, who competed at the State Age Championships held at MSAC from December 12-18, 2014. This is a big meet with tough qualifying times, and Cam qualified in three events: 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. Cam achieved sizeable PBs in all three of her events, with her best finish being top 20 in the state in the 100 breaststroke- great work Cam! IAP swimmer Ella Arnold attended as Cam’s coach on her last day of competition and did a fine job… Dom, Chow, Jo and Neil may soon be out of work .

Metro North 7-10 trials and Open Championships

What a great day three of our IAP swimmers had at the Metro North 7-10 trials and Open Championships held at Watermarc on October 11, 2014. Alannah qualified for the 7-10 Metro North team in all four of her events: 3rd in fly, 4th in back, 8th in breast, 4th in free. Nick qualified for the same in three events: 4th fly, 3rd back, 4th free. Alannah and Nick will now compete with the Metro North team at the 7-10 championships at MSAC in November. It is a terrific effort to make the team (both had over 30 competitors in their age group) and particularly for Nick, who is still 9 but was swimming for a spot in the 10 year old team because he turns ten two days before the championships. The 7-10 championships brings together the best young swimmers from right across the state- good luck to Alannah and Nick! Congratulations also to Cam who swam in the Open Championships and achieved two 12 yo state times- 100 breaststroke and 200IM. Cam will now compete at the State Championships at MSAC in December. Fabulous swimming from all three!

Tigersharks and Lilydale encouragement meets

In the past few weeks some of the girls have competed at the Tigersharks and Lilydale encouragement meets. Encouragement meets are a great way to get started in competing, as they give swimmers a taste of proper competition without the pressures and scary officials of the big qualifying meets at MSAC. Cam, Ella and Imogen swam at the Tigersharks Commonwealth Games meet in July, with some medals won, all three girls doing at least one PB and Ella reaching her goal of breaking 40 seconds in her backstroke after much hard work. Alannah joined the other three at the Lilydale meet in August for another great day there with lots of music and fun. The four girls all won ribbons, with Alannah, Cam and Ella all winning their backstroke events and first or second in the freestyle. To top it off, the girls ended the day by winning the 12/u 4x 50m freestyle relay against 9 other teams- very exciting and a fabulous effort for their first time together as a relay. Well done girls!
